A new sculpture to enrich Piazza Amendola
The artwork by Franca Marini which will be installed in the square is called “Birth with color”. It will be presented to the town on Tuesday April 11 at 12 p.m.
Siena is being enriched with a new sculpture. It will be installed in Piazza Amendola in the area facing the Local Education Authority Building. The artwork “Birth with color” by Franca Marini will be unveiled and presented to the town next Tuesday, April 11 at 12 p.m.
Piazza Amendola, which has recently been subject to maintenance work, will now be even more welcoming thanks to the presence of a sculpture made specifically for this space by Franca Marini. The initiative is promoted  by the City of Siena and the 5th City District. The unveiling will be attended by the President of the 5th City District, the artist Franca Marini, the artisans of the Saturnus Cultural Association of Serre di Rapolano and the representatives of Inox Service Society, also of Serre di Rapolano, who carried out the construction of the sculpture.

press release
Franca Marini wanted to create an art work which was not just ornamental or decorative but which, thanks to its relation to the space, could enrich it in meaning: a steel sheet  twisted to transform itself into the three strips which lift up and support the figure  made of white travertine. The porous material which absorbs the light has its counterpoint in the steel, an indestructible and absolute material which reflects the space. The whole sculpture stands on a base of rosy travertine whose circular shape could allude to that original  integrity which preexists  any human realization. The word “Birth” is here meant by the artist as the internal emerging of something new. Birth with color because of the colored ceramic insertions: sensations, emotions, may be memories of moments lived within the human relationship.
To Franca Marini an artwork, even more so a public artwork, can be defined as such only if it is capable, through the beauty and the harmony of the forms of representing content and hopes which belong not just to the individual but to humanity as a whole. The sculpture, which looks onto the beautiful historic building which forms the backdrop to the gardens and which houses the headquarters of the Local Education Authority of Siena and of the Provincial Administration of Siena, could thereby become an ideal fulcrum of an uninterrupted link between past and present, history and contemporaneity.
The artist’s project includes too the realization of a design on the ground made in white travertine to contribute to defining the relationship between the sculpture and the space where it is set. We hope that this project will be soon carried out.
